This Tuesday, December 8, 2021 in Ouagadougou, the 4th working session of the Technical Monitoring Committee (CTS) of the “PlanetGOLD” project will be held. Organized by the General Directorate of Environmental Preservation (DGPE), this meeting takes place in the presence of the General Director of Environmental Preservation, Désiré Ouédraogo and the National Project Coordinator, Alizèta Ouédraogo

The use of mercury in gold mining operations is a practice that can have a number of negative impacts on human, animal and even environmental health. However, it remains in the world in general and in Burkina Faso in particular.

In order therefore to protect human, animal and environmental health against anthropogenic emissions and discharges of mercury, the Burkinabè government, with the support of its various partners, set up the “PlanetGOLD” project in September 2019. Executed by the ” Artisanal Gold Council (AGC), with financial support from the Global Environment Facility (GEF) and technical support from the United Nations Industrial Development Organization (UNIDO), this project lasts of five (5) years and aims to contribute to the elimination of mercury and to the improvement of the gold supply chain from artisanal and small-scale mining (ASM) in Burkina Faso.

Several activities were carried out in this context, hence the 4th working session of the Technical Monitoring Committee (STC). According to the Project Coordinator, Alizèta Ouédraogo, the objective is to “validate the various reports and activities of the project”. These include, among others, the adjusted workplan of the PlanetGOLD project; readjustments and recommendations of the report on the “Revolving Fund to Support the Artisanal and Small-Scale Mining Extraction Sector (FRASE): Structure of the Fund and Basic Procedures for Its Operation”; provisional ASM curricula, having been drawn up for vocational training centers, in particular the training curricula for the Basic Qualification Certificate (CQB) level and the training curricula for the Brevet de qualification professionnelle (BQP) level.

Given the importance of these provisional documents, the Director General of Environmental Preservation Désiré Ouédraogo, who opened the present working session, invited everyone to participate actively , for the smooth running of the work. “In view of the importance of the documents proposed, I urge you to show a spirit of openness, cooperation, flexibility, active participation and sharing in order to allow the project team to obtain the best possible results, ”he said to the participants.

And to the National Coordinator, Alizèta Ouédraogo, to thank the various actors for their support. “I would like to thank all the players who support us in these development efforts and I am already looking forward to the discussions and discussions to come,” she said.
