Fence of the forest of old Yacouba Sawadogo: Promise honored!

The Acting Secretary General of the Ministry of the Environment, Green Economy and Climate Change (MEEVCC), Joseph Youma, on Wednesday January 6, 2021 in Ouahigouya, laid the foundation stone for the fence of securing the site sheltering the Yacouba Sawadogo forest, 2018 Alternative Nobel Prize winner and United Nations Champion for the environment. The total cost of the works is estimated at 62 million CFA francs.

We still remember the commitment of the President of Faso, Roch Kaboré, to secure the forest built by the alternative Nobel Prize 2018, Yacouba Sawadogo, also nicknamed “the man who stopped the desert”, during the visit of the latter at Kosyam Palace. Well, this commitment, because of the time it took to materialize on the ground, was interpreted more and more by certain critics as a promise from Gascon. The least that we can say today is that through the action of the Acting Secretary General of the Ministry of the Environment, Green Economy and Climate Change (MEEVCC), Joseph Youma, to proceed with the laying of the first stone of the fence of the site sheltering the forest of old Sawadogo, the commitment of the President of Faso has therefore been honored,

At a total cost of 62 million CFA francs, the work to enclose the said site will consist of laying concrete topped with a wire mesh. Joseph Youma, during his speech, expressed all his gratitude to the President of Faso for his fight for the preservation of the environment in general and in particular, for this support towards Yacouba Sawadogo and his fight for the environment. Yacouba Sawadogo, for his part, praised the effectiveness of the support for securing his forest. The High Commissioner of Yatenga Province, Aminata Tarnagda, and the first deputy mayor of the commune, Djénaba Sodré / Sangaraba welcomed the act and sent their congratulations and encouragement to the Alternative Nobel Prize and United Nations Champion for the environment for its dedication to the environment.

As a reminder, on the night of December 13 to 14, 2020, part of the forest that the 80-year-old built, during 40 years of hard work and using traditional techniques, suffered a loss of 0.5 hectares. on its total area estimated at 27 hectares. This sad situation, according to the words of his son Lookman, would have already occurred in the early hours of the restoration of the land, 30 years ago, and in January 2016 with the loss of more than one hectare. .
